Treatment outcome study of app-based face perception and social enhancement program for children and adolescents with ASD : A preliminary Study

Abstract
Recently, the difficulty in social interaction in those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been explained in terms of face perception and eye contact. Appropriately, based on this theory, the effectiveness of social enhancement training programs is now being researched. This new form of social enhancement training program which primarily uses electronic devices, is limited in number but has the advantage of being cost-effective and highly accessible. In this study, we developed an application-based training program(Look At Me) focusing on face perception and social enhancement, and conducted a preliminary study on children and adolescents with ASD to explore the actual applicability of the training program. Participants of the study were 28 study participants who met the ASD diagnostic criteria. Participants were trained through the application-based program for 8 weeks(56 days) and parents completed questionnaires before and after the training to measure the effectiveness of the program. The results in terms of the questionnaires showed no significant difference in autistic symptoms, but there was significant improvement in sub-domains such as the social reaction questionnaire and semi-structured questionnaire, eye-contact, and emotional understanding, expression and etc. Taking these results into consideration, the effectiveness of the training program is discussed, and evidence-based social training for social improvement and direction of future face perception training programs are suggested.
